Default Ear cropping question, pictures included.

I am new to the whole ear cropping thing. The person who i bought my pup from took him down and had his ears cropped. I don't know what they are supposed to look like, or how they are supposed to heal.
It's been about 2 days since he had them done, and they look a little sketchy. I took a couple pics.
Please let me know what you think. Looks like they are ripping open at the bottom a little. I don't know tho.

Yes, diffinitly infected. Its not uncommon for the stiches to come out like that, they will scrat at the ears and tear them out.

    What you should do:
Go to the vet, let them check it out, it may be a good idea to get him on some antibiotics like Ampicillin 250mg.
Also take the tape off, that could be what is causing the irritation. If they fall over you can correct it after they have healed, getting them fixed up is whats more important now.

To wash them, use a mild antibacterial soap, like liqid Dial in some warm water, soak a cotton ball or gauz in the solution and then gently rub the area with it. Dry it off with a clean paper towl, then dab on some triple antibiotic ointment (neosporin). Do that 2 times a day. Don't use peroxide or alcohol to clean the ears, that will be very painfull.

When our pups start to mess with the ears alot I put an E Collar/cone on them so they can't get to the ears to mess them up more.

You should get the stiches out around 7-10 days after the crop.

    Hope that helps.

So yesterday i took him to see a vet assistant/tech or what ever. She cleaned them up.
Today i took him back to a different vet/ear cropper, and they were shocked by what they saw.
Said they were super infected on both sides, and there should be no tape on them.
She also said they were extremely swollen up, and ripping the stiches, and getting stitches burried into the skin from the swelling.
He has anti inflamatory meds, and pain killers, and anti biotics now.
    Hopefully he comes thru alright.
He doesn't have a fever or anything, so i think he'll be cool.
And, the tape is gone now.
    I'll post some pics later.
Thanks for all the advice and help.

i just got my pup's ears cropped about a week ago and her's have healed pretty well, i think the vet had told us to take off the tape just before we put her in the crate for the night. i'm glad to hear that your dog is doing better now!

He is deffinately doing a lot better now! He is gona be fine.

I learned some seriously valuable lessons on my first ear cropping experience.

#1 He got them done at around 11 weeks. I should have got them done at 8 weeks.
He had litteraly half as much energy at 8 weeks than he has now. He is a full blown Tasmanian Devil dog now. He keeps messing his ears up by playing so hard.

#2 i let the person i bought him from take him on a 10 hour trip to L.A. to get them cropped with like 3 or 4 other dogs. Huge mistake.
I don't know exactly what happened, but it was something on the lines of rolling in each others shit on the trip back home.
Pretty sure that this was the main cause for the infection that set in right when he got home.

#3 i'm going to get the next dogs cropped by myself closer to home, so if something goes wrong, i can take the dog straight to the place he or she was cropped.

Overall, my dog is fine now, and i learned my lesson the hard way. But isn't that how life usually works?

I'll put some pics up in a couple days.

    Thanks for all the help/advice!

The only advice I can give you, and the best advice I can give you, is to first; Take the pup to a vet, and make shure the ears are not infetcted; Second, you need to clean them twice a day, once in the morning and once at night for the first week. Simply use a handful of cotton balls soaked with PEROXIDE! Hold the dogs head with your empty hand, and with the other, place the cottom balls firmly against the dogs head and rubb them in a circular motion, until ALL of the SCABS come off, you need to be able to see the wound, if the dogs ears start to bleed, just apply a little bit of Gold Bond powder and that will stop the bleeding, after the scab step you apply neosporin to the bare wound. The dogs ears should not have any tape for the first week after the crop. The tapeing should only be done after the stiches have been removed, if the ear is not standing correctly. I am not a vet, but I had my dogs ears done by one of the best ear cropping vets in the Los Angeles County, his name is DR. Robert Labounty, people that show their dogs through the AKC and UKC go to him from all over the nation. Hope every thing works out for you.

i wondering why they were tape. you got to let the ear breath if not mositure built up and cause infection. After you get the ear crop put on antibotic for a couple of day to prevent any infection and keep it clean wit wound care

Everyone has their own ideas on after care for an ear crop.. but peroxide stings like a bitch when I have an open cut, so I wouldnt say to put just peroxide on the ears, maybe dilute it a little. I have had a couple dogs ears cropped, and in my opinion just keep an eye on them, dont let them get wet, and they will heal fast, main thing is to take out the stiches so they can heal up nice.
